A Proofreader gives your manuscript a careful once-over looking for typos, grammar mistakes, conflicting tenses and incongruent subject/object clauses. They can also pick up inconsistencies such as changing a character’s name or description halfway through the manuscript.

A copy editor does more in depth proofreading, but also looks for inconsistencies in spelling, character traits, and general continuity and consistency in the story (e.g. the FMC is described as tall, blonde and slim in Chapter 1 and brunette and curvy in Chapter 10).

A copy editor will also flag things for fact-checking (e.g. historical dates) or getting permission for use (e.g. song lyrics).

A line editor does all of the above, plus they address awkward phrasing, overuse of words, confusing phrases, changes in tone, diction, repetitions, and over-writing.  They will also recommend cuts, additions and/or rewrites of weak language, clichés and other things that need improvement.

A beta reader provides feedback on a manuscript, and helps the author identify issues like plot holes, inconsistencies, character development problems, and overall readability.
